Appian World 2026 - why Appian says serious AI needs serious process

But the real ‘light bulb’ moment was not a feature reveal at all.
It was Appian CEO Matt Calkins dissing the humble light bulb.
Not because the bulb didn’t matter, but because the bulb alone changed little.
In Calkins’ telling, the light bulb was a breakthrough that would have remained useless at scale without the surrounding infrastructure needed to make it work. More clever object than driver of social transformation.
And so to become useful, it needed transmission standards, safe connections and widely available electrical grids — scaffolding that made it meaningful in the places where people actually lived and worked.
The analogy was blunt, but it landed.
Because Calkins’ point was that AI is in a similar position — a potentially world-changing technology ...
