Two heads better than one? Will the co-CEO leadership model become a permanent fixture or a fleeting trend?
diginomica.comDespite mixed success in the past, it seems that adopting a co-CEO model is starting to make a bit of a comeback, particularly among companies in the tech sector.
Some, such as Netflix, have certainly flourished by taking this approach - whether we are talking about Ted Sarandos and Reed Hastings (now Chairman) being dual CEOs from July 2020 until January 2023. Or Sarandos and Greg Peters (former Chief Operating Officer) who followed suit from January 2023 until today.
Another example of when the model worked well, until tragedy struck that is, was Oracle. In 2014, Founder and CEO Larry Ellison stepped down to become Executive Chairman and Chief Technology Officer. He was replaced by Safra Catz and Mark Hurd - until Hurd resigned for health reasons five years later, before dying of cancer at only 62 years old.
