The Golden Globes ignored this underrated body horror movie — but the Oscars didn’t

Shudder's new body horror The Ugly Stepsister has been shortlisted for an Oscar. The underrated movie could follow in the footsteps of The Substance, which I called the best body horror of 2024.

The Oscars shortlist does not mean it's guaranteed to make it to the final nominations, but it is edging one step closer to going up against some huge movies like Sinners, Frankenstein and Wicked: For Good.

The Ugly Stepsister has been nominated in the Makeup and Hairstyling category. Ten have made the shortlist, but only five will make it through to the final nominees. Here's the full list:

It's a strong lineup for sure, but we do know the Academy has favored body horror in this category before ...
