Team Behind Beloved Dark Sky Weather App Returns With a Spiritual Successor


The creators of the loved-and-lost Dark Sky weather app have returned with a new service: Acme Weather. The team previously sold Dark Sky to Apple, helping build the brand's WeatherKit. But after Apple shuttered Dark Sky in 2023, they got to work on a spiritual successor, which is now available on iOS.

Acme Weather builds on Dark Sky's core strengths but presents forecasts differently. Instead of a single, definitive prediction, the new app shows a main forecast alongside alternate predictions, which display a range of possible outcomes for temperature, rain, and more. A tight cluster of lines on its graphs indicates high confidence in the forecast, while a wider spread suggests conditions could change more. The app uses weather predictions based on data from weather models, satellites, radar, and ground stations.
