How GPS IIIF Satellites Could Make GPS Jam-Proof in Conflict Zones
extremetech.comThe next generation of GPS satellites, known as GPS Block IIIF (or GPS III Follow On), is set to launch in 2027 and will bring a number of key improvements to the global location technology. Designed to prevent jamming, the new satellites are much more powerful and can leverage specialized beamforming technologies for more targeted, jam-resistant communication, as well as add new features to aid search-and-rescue.
Over the past few years, and specifically following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, GPS jamming has become increasingly problematic. This has affected military units in conflict zones, but also civilian aircraft, in both targeted attacks and collateral damage. To counter that, Lockheed Martin has developed the GPS IIIF satellites, which, when launched, could help prevent future jamming for the American military, American businesses, and the country's allies.
