Back in 2007, CIOs were struggling with alignment issues; however, the indispensable role CIOs played in protecting organizations following the 2007-2008 credit crisis, the following austerity and recession, an economically disastrous Brexit, and then the pandemic, led to a period of healthy alignment between CEOs and CIOs. A study sponsored by cybersecurity firm Netskope suggests generative AI is plundering that good relationship.

Almost 40% of CIOs report poor alignment with the CEO in the study Crucial Conversations: How to Achieve CIO-CEO Alignment in the Era of AI. Also, 31% say they are not confident they know what the CEO wants from them. As a result, 34% say the CEO doesn't make them feel empowered to make long-term Information Technology (IT) strategy decisions.
