A fierce national backlash is brewing over a leaked White House draft executive order that would strip states of their power to regulate artificial intelligence - a move celebrated by the tech sector but condemned by bipartisan lawmakers and privacy and cybersecurity advocates.

The draft order, titled "Eliminating State Law Obstruction of National AI Policy," directs the U.S. attorney general to form an "AI litigation task force" that aims to challenge state AI laws on grounds such as unconstitutional regulation of interstate commerce or preemption by federal law.
