AI Is Industrializing Identity Fraud

Artificial intelligence has made identity impersonation cheaper, faster and harder to detect. Deepfakes now undermine the credential-based systems organizations have long relied on, and traditional authentication can't cover every vulnerability in the identity life cycle, said Peter James, chief product officer at iProov.

The problem runs deeper than login screens. Credentials don't exist at onboarding, and during account recovery, they've already been compromised. Video calls introduce another gap - deepfakes have grown sophisticated enough that human eyesight can't catch them. Technology must pick up where perception fails, pulling metadata from devices and analyzing signals beyond what's visible on screen, he said.
