Waymo Under Investigation for Self-Driving Car Crashes and Traffic Violations


A raft of giant companies have spent the past decade pouring money into self-driving cars, aiming to free humans from the tediousness of being behind the wheel. It was easier said than done, though. Google spin-off Waymo was among the early leaders in the race to develop truly autonomous driving, but it's still just an experimental service in a few cities. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is now scrutinizing a series of crashes involving the company's robotic taxis that could delay the driverless future even more.

The agency's Office of Defects Investigation announced this week that it was beginning an inquiry focused on the company's 5th-generation autonomous driving system. The report includes 22 separate Waymo incidents that fall into two categories: either the Waymo taxi was the only vehicle being operated at the time of the collision, or its behavior violated traffic laws.
