This Xbox Ally X Update Promises up to 30% Smoother Gameplay


This April, Microsoft will bring its AI-powered Auto SR (Automatic Super Resolution), aka Auto SR, to the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X. The company says Auto SR can produce up to 30% smoother performance in compatible games by rendering at a lower resolution, then using AI upscaling to restore visual clarity.

In a Forza Horizon 5 demo, Microsoft used Auto SR to boost the game's frame rate to 51 frames per second (from 35fps).

Auto SR runs at the OS level in Windows 11 and does not require per-game integration. It uses the Ally X's Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme NPU to handle the AI workload, which is why this update is only available for Ally X, not the older ROG/Xbox Ally, which lacks an NPU.

Microsoft says Auto SR supports DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games, and that performance and image quality gains depend on each title ...
