It’s fair to say that relations between the European Union and the US have not been good of late. The old allies have been at loggerheads with the Europeans suspicious of the intentions of a Washington administration that perpetuates the myth that the European Union (EU) was set up with the aim of undermining the US.

While President Trump declares that the US has never been held in more respect around the world, the EU houses a lot of people who don’t buy into this idea right now. A recent Politico survey of over 10,000 people across France, Germany and the UK, as well as Canada, found that the US was felt to be an unreliable friend by more than half of those polled, with the most favorable rating coming from the UK where the best that could be mustered was 35% approval.
