Should a Central Authority Regulate AI in the UK?

The need for artificial intelligence regulations is being debated by worldwide. How can governments regulate this booming industry without stifling innovation? Who should serve as the regulator?

The U.K. government plans to let sector-specific regulators handle AI safety issues for each industry, but that approach could prove to be shortsighted considering the dynamic nature of AI technology, said Lord Christopher Holmes, member of the U.K. House of Lords and Select Committee on Communications and Digital Kingdom.

"The difficulty in that is that though those experts obviously have deep expertise in financial services, in healthcare and so on, they may have little or no expertise in artificial intelligence or indeed the experts to bring to bear," Holmes said.
