Report: Intel Is Planning to Lay Off Up to 10,000 Factory Workers in July


Shortly after taking the top job at Intel, new CEO Lip-Bu Tan indicated that reducing the size of Intel’s workforce was part of his turnaround plan. That reduction will soon result in sizable layoffs at Intel Foundry, according to The Oregonian. The report is based on an email sent to Intel employees. Although Intel hasn’t confirmed the memo, multiple Intel employees confirmed it to the publication.

The memo likely isn’t a complete surprise for Intel employees. As we mentioned, CEO Lip-Bu Tan alerted employees to the impending layoffs in April. Last week, Intel warned its factory workers to expect layoffs in July. The most recent memo, from Intel Vice President Naga Chandrasekaran, described the cuts as “difficult” but “essential” and said the workforce would be reduced by between 15% and 20%.
