Real Or Fake Frames? Steam's New Overlay Detects DLSS And FSR Frame Gen

There has been a major emphasis from hardware vendors lately, especially NVIDIA, on the technique of interpolation, better known as frame generation. Whether using AI as in NVIDIA and Intel's methods, or less complex frame interpolation as in AMD's FSR 3, the ultimate result is the same: "generated" frames that are displayed "between" classically-rendered frames. One problem with this technique is that most frame-rate counters can't tell the difference, so there's no way to easily see what your game's actual simulation frame rate is.

Fortunately, Valve has stepped up and delivered an update to the Steam in-game overlay that will bring an RTSS level of information to every Steam user. RTSS, for those unfamiliar, is the RivaTuner Statistics Server, and it provides the overlays for MSI Afterburner and CapFrameX that you see in many hardware test videos and screenshots on sites like this one.
