Google has announced that Pixel 6a phones will receive a mandatory software update to reduce the risk of battery overheating. The update will add battery management capabilities that reduce battery capacity and charging performance after the battery reaches 400 charge cycles.

The company will contact affected users next month with detailed information on how to address the issue, as reported by Android Authority.

This update comes after multiple reports emerged over the past several months of Pixel 6a devices overheating and even catching fire. Some users have shared images of melted phones. This situation is similar to a problem Google had with the Pixel 4a, which also risked battery overheating. In that case, Google released an update that reduced how the device performed and offered free battery replacements or compensation to affected users.
