Perplexity Makes AI Browser Free, Adds $5 News Plan
extremetech.comPerplexity has made its AI browser, Comet, free for all users worldwide. Previously accessible only through Perplexity's Max tier at $200 per month, Comet—which can summarize web pages, pull key details, look through links, and more—is now available without charge, with rate limits for free users. At a launch event in San Francisco this week, CEO Aravind Srinivas said he hopes the move will help to "build a better internet."
In addition to the free Comet browser, Perplexity has announced Comet Plus, a $5 monthly add-on that gives users access to news and articles from major outlets, like CNN, The Washington Post, Fortune, and WIRED. The company says it shares 80% of subscription revenue with publishers in this program, which dovetails with its claim that high-quality sources are essential for an effective product.
