Microsoft Ditches Dedicated Charging Port on New Surface, but That Isn’t Even the Worst Part


Earlier this week, Microsoft announced two new Surface devices, the Surface Pro 12-inch and the Surface Laptop 13-inch. Both of these devices no longer have the company's proprietary Surface Connect charging port. Instead, they can now only be charged via USB-C.

But that isn't even the bad part: Microsoft also decided to go with slower USB-C 3.2 ports with a maximum speed of 10Gbps, compared with the 40Gbps Thunderbolt-C port on the latest MacBook Air M4, which I believe is this device's true competitor.

This is not the first time Microsoft has removed the Surface Connect port from a device, but the decision now seems to indicate that the company is fully comfortable with charging over USB-C. As reported by The Verge, this likely means that the next versions of the larger Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models will also come without the magnetic charging port ...
