Google Uses AI to Generate Over a Quarter of Its New Code


Google is all-in on artificial intelligence, to the point that it's using AI to generate a large chunk of its code. CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed this week that more than a quarter of the company's new code is written by AI, then reviewed and tweaked by human engineers.

Pichai's comments come from this week's AI-heavy Q3 earnings call, the transcript of which Google's Keyword blog published on Tuesday. Pichai outlined what he views as advancements in Search, including AI overviews, new Lens features, and a novel "circle to search" tool for Android. He also reported a Google Cloud growth spurt, which he owes to Vertex (an AI platform that offers developers access to generative AI models, including Google's own Gemini 1.5) and the data platform BigQuery (which supports machine learning efforts).
