Gemini-Powered Google Maps Feature Lets Users Generate Custom Maps
extremetech.comGoogle Maps is getting a Gemini-powered upgrade. Beyond being able to chat hands-free with Gemini within Maps and receive directions based on popular landmarks, users can now create custom, interactive maps on a whim.
The software's new builder agent creates map-based projects from text prompts and connects AI assistants directly to Google Maps documentation. Users describe the kind of interactive map they want, and Maps generates the corresponding prototype. Users can ask to create a Street View tour of a city, see the local weather, or find pet-friendly hotels in the area. Once the tool generates the project, developers can export the code, test it using their own API keys, or make changes through Firebase Studio. The same agent also comes with a styling option that allows users to customize map colors and designs to match their brand's aesthetics or their personal creative style.
