Federal Shutdown Deal Revives Key CISA Grant, Some Staffing

A congressional funding bill that appears set to end the longest government shutdown in U.S. history includes provisions to restore some staffing at the nation's beleaguered cyber defense agency and a major grant program.

The spending package reauthorizes the State and Local Cybersecurity Grant program, launched in 2021 to bolster cyber defenses across state and local governments. It additionally reinstates a cyberthreat sharing law that lapsed when the shutdown began (see: Congress Moves to Revive CISA 2015 After Shutdown).

The $1 billion grant program is co-managed by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It is critical funding source for local governments with limited cyber resources.
