Ethereum Rollups: Boosting Scalability Without Sacrificing Security

by EScholar: Electronic Academic Papers for Scholars August 12th, 2025

Ethereum rollups are a Layer 2 scaling solution that processes transactions off-chain while posting summaries back to the Ethereum mainnet. This approach reduces fees, boosts speed, and preserves Ethereum’s security. There are two main types: Optimistic rollups, which assume validity unless challenged, and ZK-rollups, which verify transactions with cryptographic proofs. Both aim to overcome Ethereum’s scalability bottleneck and make blockchain technology viable for mass adoption.
