Apple Ordered to Pay Masimo $634 Million in Apple Watch Patent Infringement Case

A jury found that the workout mode and heart rate notification features of the Apple Watch infringed on a Masimo patent covering blood oxygen monitoring technology. Approximately 43 million watches sold between 2020 and 2022 are thought to be involved.
Apple disagrees with the court's decision and plans to appeal. The company states that Masimo has filed multiple lawsuits in various courts, and most of the patents have been found to be invalid. It also contends that the patent in this case expired in 2022 and relates to outdated patient monitoring technology. Nonetheless, the jury sided firmly with Masimo's position that an Apple Watch qualifies as a patient monitor, Reuters reports.
